Locksmiths in Saltaire & Shipley

Locksmith is the single most scammed trade in the UK. Fake “local” numbers that route to call centres in Birmingham. £60 quoted on the phone, £300 demanded on the doorstep. We’ve seen it happen on Victoria Road. This page exists so you don’t get caught out.

What’s going on?

Pick the closest match and we’ll help from there.

The locksmith scam — how it works

You’re locked out at 11pm. You Google “locksmith Saltaire”. The top results are paid ads. You call one — they say £60–£80. Great. A van turns up 20 minutes later with no branding. The person doesn’t try to pick the lock. They drill it out immediately (takes 30 seconds). Then they tell you the lock needs replacing — obviously — and the total is now £280.

This isn’t an exaggeration. Trading Standards has documented this pattern across the UK. The number you called routes to a national call centre that dispatches the nearest available person — often not a trained locksmith at all. The “Saltaire Locksmiths” or “Shipley Emergency Locks” name is just a Google Ads listing. There’s no shop. There’s no local person.

A genuine locksmith will try non-destructive entry first. Most modern locks can be picked or bypassed without drilling — it takes skill and patience, but it saves you the cost of a new lock. If someone goes straight to the drill, they either can’t pick or they know a new lock means a bigger bill.

Never agree to work you didn’t ask for.

If a locksmith drills your lock without trying non-destructive entry first, or starts quoting for additional security upgrades you didn’t request, you are entitled to refuse and pay only for what was agreed. If you feel pressured or threatened, call the police.

How to spot a fake

  • No branded van — they arrive in a plain car
  • Can't show you ID or MLA membership
  • Go straight to drilling without trying other methods
  • The price changes when they arrive
  • They pressure you to replace more than the lock you called about
  • The phone number goes to a call centre, not a person

Saltaire’s original doors and locks

Many of the original Saltaire terraces still have their Victorian front doors — solid hardwood, often with original ironmongery. If you’re replacing locks on one of these doors, you want a locksmith who understands heritage hardware:

Mortice locks

Most original Saltaire doors have a 5-lever mortice deadlock. Replacing this with a modern Euro cylinder means cutting the door — on a Victorian hardwood door, that's irreversible. A good locksmith will fit a BS3621-rated mortice instead.

Night latches

The classic Saltaire door setup is a night latch (Yale-type) plus a mortice deadlock. Upgrading the night latch to a deadlocking version (BS8621) improves security without changing the door.

Insurance requirements

Most home insurance policies require BS3621-rated locks on external doors. Check your policy. A locksmith can upgrade you to compliant locks without replacing the whole mechanism.

What a locksmith should actually cost

Knowing the fair price is your best defence against overcharging. These are real ranges for the BD17/BD18 area from legitimate locksmiths.

Lockout — daytime (non-destructive)
£60–£120No lock replacement needed
Lockout — night/weekend
£100–£180Anti-social hours premium
Lock change (per lock)
£60–£120Including new lock
Broken lock repair
£50–£100
Full property security upgrade
£200–£500All external doors

If the price changes when they arrive

You are under no obligation to proceed. A locksmith who quotes £80 on the phone and demands £250 on the doorstep is not a locksmith you should let touch your door. Tell them you’re going to call someone else. If they become aggressive, call the police.

What does a locksmith typically cost?

Ballpark prices for the Saltaire & Shipley area.

Locked out — what to try before you call

Before you spend £80–£120 on a locksmith, check these:

  1. 1Check every door and window. Back door, side gate, ground floor windows. One might be unlocked.
  2. 2If you have a Yale-type night latch, check if a neighbour has a credit card or loid tool — some night latches can be shimmed open in seconds. (This is why you should upgrade to a deadlocking Yale.)
  3. 3Check if you left a key with a neighbour, friend, or family member. A spare key is always cheaper than a locksmith.
  4. 4If you're a tenant, call your landlord or letting agent. They should have a spare key.
  5. 5If none of the above work, call a locksmith — but call a real one.

MLA — what does it actually mean?

The Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) is the main trade body. MLA members are vetted, CRB-checked, and inspected. It’s not a guarantee of perfection, but it means the person has been trained and assessed. You can check membership on the MLA website with their name or company.

Not every good locksmith is MLA-registered — membership costs money and some excellent independent locksmiths don’t bother. But if someone claims MLA membership, you can verify it. If they can’t show you a membership card or it doesn’t check out online, that’s a red flag.

Finding a real local locksmith

  1. 1.Search the MLA’s “Find a Locksmith” tool with your postcode
  2. 2.Check that the business has a real address (not just a PO Box or virtual office)
  3. 3.Call the number — a real person should answer, not a call centre
  4. 4.Ask for the total price including call-out, labour, and lock — in writing
  5. 5.When they arrive, ask for ID before they touch the door

Your rights when a locksmith overcharges

This happens more often than it should. You agree a price on the phone, the locksmith arrives, does the work, then demands a different (higher) amount.

  1. 1

You have a verbal contract at the agreed price.

The price quoted on the phone is a binding agreement. If they demand more, you're legally entitled to pay only what was agreed. Get the quote in writing (text message) to make this watertight.

  2. 2

They cannot hold your property hostage.

A locksmith cannot refuse to leave or refuse to hand over new keys until you pay an inflated price. This is a criminal offence (blackmail / demanding with menaces).

  3. 3

Pay what was agreed, then report them.

If they're being aggressive, pay the agreed amount by card if possible (paper trail), then report to Trading Standards and the police non-emergency line (101).

  4. 4

    Chargeback is your friend.

If you paid by card under duress for an amount above the agreed price, contact your bank and request a chargeback. Explain the situation — banks take this seriously.

Our accountability register

Locksmiths is the one trade where we expect to use the accountability register most. The scam problem is well-documented nationally, and Saltaire is not immune.

If you’ve been overcharged, pressured, or scammed by someone claiming to be a locksmith in the Saltaire/Shipley area — found through us or not — please report it to us. Include the phone number you called, the name they gave, the price quoted vs the price charged, and any photos of the work. We will publish factual summaries of repeat offenders, and we will also report them to Trading Standards on your behalf.

Common questions

Real questions from Saltaire residents. If yours isn’t here, ask us.

How can I tell if a locksmith number is real or a call centre?

Call and listen. A real local locksmith answers with their name or business name. A call centre answers generically — "emergency locksmiths, how can I help?" Also check: does the number appear on a real business website with a physical address? Is the business on Google Maps with actual photos and reviews?

Should a locksmith be able to get in without drilling?

In most cases, yes. A trained locksmith can pick or bypass most residential locks non-destructively. Drilling should be a last resort. If they go straight to drilling without trying other methods, they either lack the skill or they want to charge you for a new lock.

What locks does my insurance require?

Most home insurance policies require BS3621-rated locks (5-lever mortice deadlocks) on external doors. Check your specific policy wording. If your locks don't meet this standard and you make a claim, the insurer can refuse to pay out. A locksmith can check and upgrade if needed.

My key snapped in the lock. Can it be removed?

Usually yes, without damaging the lock. A locksmith uses a broken key extractor — it's a standard tool. If the key snapped because the lock mechanism is worn, they'll recommend replacing the lock. If the key just broke from metal fatigue, extraction plus a new key cut is all you need.

How much should a lockout cost at 2am?

Expect £100-£180 for a night-time lockout in the BD18 area. This should include non-destructive entry if possible. If they need to drill (rare with a good locksmith), a new lock is on top — typically £30-£60 for a standard Yale or mortice. Any total over £250 for a straightforward lockout deserves scrutiny.

Can I change the locks on a rented property?

Technically you need your landlord's permission to change locks. However, many landlords are fine with it as long as you give them a copy of the new key. If you're changing locks for safety reasons (e.g. after a break-in or relationship breakdown), do it first and tell the landlord after.
